The Certificate IV in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (40649SA) will solidify your knowledge of the English language, including identifying basic grammatical concepts, terminology and traditional meta-language.

In our TESOL courses you will learn to design and develop learning strategies, and to design and create learning resources in able to assist your future international students in developing their English competencies.  This course is designed to give you the the skills you need for teaching English as second language in Australia, or throughout the world.

Course Outline & Structure

Course Clustering: Our Cert IV TESOL (40649SA) course design uses a “clustered” approach. This means we have combined our course into just three workbooks: Knowledge; Design; and Delivery (instead of 5 separate units). This holistic approach means that our students are able to study at a good pace and gain an understanding quicker because learning and assessment tasks are not duplicated across multiple units.

Expected Study Hours:  There are a total of 620 expected study hours for this course. This equals approximately 12 hours of study per week for the online 12 month course, however you may work at your own pace and complete your course faster if you’d like!

Assessment Methods:  Assessment is conducted using a combination of written questions and activities, document gathering, and observation to give you maximum opportunity to develop your English teaching skills and knowledge.

TESOL40649SA Course units

Core Units include (5 total):

AABBH – Design and deliver an ESL teaching program
AABBK – Design and develop an ESL learning framework
AABBM – Plan an integrated lesson using communicative language teaching methodology
AABBL – Identify and use basic grammatical concepts and traditional meta language
AABBG – Demonstrate understanding of the basic terminology of traditional grammar

Entry Requirements

To enter Inspire Education’s Certificate IV in TESOL (40649SA) you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Demonstrate an acceptable level of both written and spoken English language competence (see more on this below)

These requirements apply to both native or non-native English speakers and ensures that applicants have the required skills to undertake the course successfully.   To demonstrate English language skills you must fulfill at least one of the following criteria:

  • Have a minimum score of (academic) International English Language Testing System (IELTS) 6.5 in all macro skills. The IELTS tests should be no more than 12 months old.
  • Have an IELTS equivalent minimum score of 6.5 in all macro skills
  • Have evidence that you completed Year 12 English (equivalent or greater qualifications are acceptable), including language-rich subjects
  • Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) at or around level 4 across learning, reading, writing, and oral communication core skills

Applicants will have to successfully pass Inspire Education’s pre-interview language task and interview before commencing their TESOL course.  During interview and in pre-interview language tasks successful applicants will show:

  • An appropriate awareness of the English language as it is used and its difficulties for learners
  • An ability to analyse language at a suitable level and to express ideas clearly
  • A willingness to engage in discussion of teaching/learning approaches
  • Self-awareness and flexibility of approach
  • Willingness to interact, listen and respond appropriately
  • An ability to take pressure and maintain positive rapport
  • A competence in written and spoken English that will enable them to teach the language to students without causing error

To complete your studies you will need to have access to:

  • A Computer (PC or Mac) with Internet (a minimum reliable speed of 5mbps is recommended)
  • Google Chrome Web Browser
  • Latest Adobe Flash Player
  • Latest Adobe Acrobat Reader (Essential for Mac Users)
  • Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel 97 or later and Windows Media Player (or equivalent)
  • Video recording equipment (e.g. mobile phone or video recorder) OR Access to an industry qualified (TESOL, CELTA, TEFL etc.) observer to watch your practical assignments
  • At least 4 students who are ESL (English Second Language) Learners
  • A classroom or simulated classroom
  • Physical resources appropriate to the teaching professions

Remember, during your studies you will be required to arrange and complete at least 6 hours of workplace practical delivery with a minimum of four ESL students.
